A senior technical adviser from the Overseas Development Institute conducted an initial mission to Accra last week on behalf of the TAF2+ to meet with colleagues at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI). The mission was part of a four-month assignment to assist MOTI with developing a national African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) negotiations and implementation strategy and an adjoining package of technical assistance and capacity building support. The adviser met with key staff at MOTI, as well as representatives of other key government agencies.
The Advisory Mission is part of a larger anticipated phase of support by the TAF2+ programme, anticipated over the next three year period. In this initial stage, the activities focused on reviewing and obtaining a first approach and assessment of these three elements:
1. The principles and objectives of trade policymaking and negotiations.
2. The challenges and actions towards the implementation and further negotiations of the AfCFTA
3. The institutions, structure and capabilities of the trade policymaking and negotiations process.
Another mission is anticipated in July, with work anticipated to conclude by November.
